New Moon

Loving life in college
My goals now crystal clear
I want to create a life for myself
That makes my background disappear

Being broke as broke can be
Makes it hard to grasp
How to survive these next four years
And keep my future plans in tact

Life at home is flailing
Mom is angry at me for
Choosing to be with my boyfriend
Abandoning my babysitting chores

Weighed down by frustration
I focus on the now
Gabino’s grandpa is on life support
Cherish the minutes left, somehow

Amid the tornado spinning
My car is about to die
Not willing to risk my life
Grandparents surprise me with a new ride

Somehow things start to settle
I’m grateful I can breathe
Sometimes to make up
Its best to agree to disagree

Its been years since I’ve talked to Dad
He suddenly writes to me
Grasped by his religion
Odd, but a relief

We reconnect briefly
Plan a trip to see him soon
Jeffrey and I will visit
Hoping for a new moon
