Self-Portrait

The urge to compete comes naturally
Craving the rush it brings
Though, more than anything
I like the responsibility it springs

Wearing a big ol’ shiny crown
A white sash with your county’s name
Suddenly people listen to you
Curious to learn from where you came

Oddly enough, I speak to audiences
Without donning this gaudy charade
I share my unconventional background
In hopes you’ll want to say

“Sometimes, I too, feel alone in the crowd.”
“I’ve had hardships only I know about.”
“My parents went through a nasty divorce.”
“Tears I’ve cried have been hidden, no doubt.”

Let’s take these cards we’ve been dealt
And try our best to see
We have more control of our destiny
Than our surroundings allow us to see

In control of our self-portrait
We are the artists of our soul
I won’t allow the universe to deny me
A chance at changing my role
